Christmas: Past and Present

From the humble beginnings of a single store on Drury Lane, John Sainsbury and his wife Mary Ann built the foundations of a company that now boasts over 1,000 stores.

It’s fair to say in that time the stores themselves have become almost unrecognisable from their original form, but the values instilled by John and Mary Ann remain as strong today as they were back in 1869: to be the best for food and health; to source with integrity; to respect the environment; to make a positive difference in the community and to be a great place to work were - and still are - integral to everything Sainsbury’s does.

The following images give an insight into just how different things look today compared with Sainsbury’s early years.
